You will not be disappointed. They transform a couple of covers of the Rolling Stones "Wild Horses" and The New Riders "Panama Red" into incredibly well done tunes, and the sweetest song on the CD is "Moonlight Midnight" David Grissman is solid and delivers the right touch on the mandoline.
It includes Jerry Garcia(Grateful Dead) and Vasser Clements, who may be the greatest fiddle player of all time, then you need to listen to this one. Looking for some vintage bluegrass which a lot of folks have never heard of.
It is a superb recording, and the performance is nothing short of spectacular. It is a live recording performed in San Francisco in 1973(Dead's time in Cisco).
at the Boarding House. This is a hard CD to find so get it while you can because it is out of print.
The makeup of the OAITW band, a pro pickup group, isn't particularly unusual - they are all fine musicians who can play together without stretching. And its charm and vibrance survive reproduction superbly. Well, I'm not a shill nor given to overenthusiasm so the following shouldn't be discounted, at least not for that reason. The group jelled, clicked, whatever the team thing is that makes bands out of a group of musicians. Probably on the 'top five' list of almost any real bluegrass fan. The material, aside from being a bit eclectic, isn't anything out of bounds. There is also in abundance the gossamer, fairy dust, whatever you want to call it that puts a very few live performances on some magic carpet.
Try to figure out why and you come back to. So. This is simply one of the greatest live bluegrass performances ever recorded. But what one would have expected, a good, fun performance from a bunch of pro performers isn't what resulted. But that also happens without producing an album of this caliber. fairy dust and magic carpets. Best of breed - highest recommendation.
This is one of the best albums I've ever heard. No longer in production so get your hands on a copy of this if you can.
I had the LP, then the cassette, and now have the CD. With its soulful vocals & lyrics and masterful bluegrass instrumentals, including Jerry Garcia's one-of-a-kind sound woven throughout the medley, it's among my all time favorite recordings. Liquid soul, bluegrass style. Truly music to the ears.
If you likes The Grateful Dead and if you like bluegrass, then this is something you have to have.
